Bruno van Straaten the Elder, was born in Utrecht in 1786, where he worked and remained for the most part of his life. He was the pupil of the landscape artist, Jan Kobell II, from whom he learned the taste for both compositions and the use of colour. Bruno van Straaten the Elder took part in several contemporary exhibitions from 1816 to 1861, in the cities of The Hage, Amsterdam and Utrecht. He was also an active lithographer and teacher, amongst whom was his son, Bruno van Straaten the Younger. He died in his native city in 1870.

The painted works of Bruno van Straaten the Elder are to be found in the Centraal Museum Utrecht and the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam, while his graphic works can be found in the Rijksprentenkabinett in Amsterdam and in the Gemeentearchief in Utrecht. A painting with a similar atmosphere was with Kunsthandel Simonis en Buunk in 1999, a “Winterlandscape with Skaters”.
