Born in Haarlem, Dutch painter and draughtsman, older brother of Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde. At the age of 14 he was in the workshop of the Rembrandt pupil J.W. de Wet. Together with his brother, he made a long journey through Germany, along the Rhein to Heidelberg. Besides his important paintings, his drawing are very rare. His architectural studies are topographically exact which were made on his journeys. Several figure studies are known, but since few are signed, most drawings are based on comparisons.
