“Pompeo Ghitti”

Pompeo Ghitti was born in the village of Marone, at the shores of Lake Iseo, near Brescia. He was a pupil of the painters Ottavio Amigoni and Angelo Everardi, and then of Giovanni Battista Discepoli. Pompeo Ghitti contributed to the extensive fresco series in the Brescian church of Santo Cristo. He painted two altarpieces for the parochial church of Santa Maria Assunta in Ghedi. He painted the main altarpiece for the church of the Confraternity of the SS. Trinità dei Pellegrini, now called Teatro San Carlino in Brescia. He also frescoed the Castle overlooking the town of Cazzago San Martino, the counter facade of the Brescian church of S. Maria in Calchera and the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Gardone. His main pupils were Pietro Avogadro and Giovanni Antonio Capello. Pompeo Ghitti died in his native city in1703.

The attribution has been confirmed by Dr. Angelo Loda, Parma, in a communication dated December 9th, 2009. Dr. Angelo Loda intends to publish the present drawing in a forthcoming article on Pompeo Ghitti. Dr. Loda believes that the composition represents a Carmelite Saint, probably Saint Angelo of Jerusalem, and that the drawing can be connected to the Brescian fresco cycles in either the church of Santa Maria del Carmine or San Pietro in Olivetto, datable to the last decade of the seventeenth century.
