Luca Giordano, born in Naples in 1634, was initially trained by his father Antonio and then later in the circle of Giuseppe de Ribera. In about 1652 he left Naples to study in Rome, Florence and Venice, paying particular attention to the work of Pietro da Cortona and the great masters of the sixteenth century Venice as Titian and Paolo Veronese. Back in Naples in 1653, Giordano developed a Baroque style based on what he learnt on his travels, although he never entirely abandoned his links with Ribera's naturalistic style. In 1665, he was in Florence again, working for the Medici amongst others, and later in Venice working on altarpieces in the church of Santa Maria della Salute. His great fresco cycles in Naples date from some years after his return: the one in the Abbey of Monte Cassino and the cupola of S. Brigida. By 1679 Giordano's fame was enormous, both in Italy and abroad. On a visit to Florence in 1682 he painted the dome of the Cappella Corsini in the Church of the Carmine, and the Library and the Gallery of Palazzo Medici-Riccardi which he completed in 1685. Giordano stayed in Naples until 1692 when he was summoned to Spain by Charles II. In the ten years he spent there he carried out grandiose decorative schemes in the Escorial, in the Palace of Buen Retiro and in the sacristy of the Toledo Cathedral. After the death of Charles II, Giordano returned to Naples where he remained until his death in 1705. (Clovis Whitefield and Jane Martineau, "Painting in Naples 1606 - 1705". The present drawing can be dated to the 1650’s, Giordano’s early period, when he drew these types of nervous pen drawings, often with sparse hatch work. Comparative drawings are the “Tribute Money” in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the “Holy Family” in the Graphische Sammlung in Munich (inv.no.2766), the “Death of Samson” in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (inv.no.2302), the “Rest on the Flight to Egypt” in the Museo di San Martino in Naples (inv.no.20591), the “Putti with Ducks” in the British Museum in London, and the “Saint Sebastian” in the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto.
